Highlands Castle was born from a father's promise to his young son...
“Someday I’ll build a house where we both will live. A place where you can bring your friends and create special memories… Someday Jason, I will build you a castle."
Looking back to 1978, my 3-year old son would likely have never remembered these words. The promise had more to do with a desire to build a better life than an actual castle.
It would be another 5-years before the ideal property presented itself, a mountaintop in Bolton Landing, NY.
While clearing the land for the foundation, a picture was being painted. Within a matter of weeks, the most spectacular view in the world was uncovered. It seemed as though these majestic vistas had been waiting to be unveiled. How was it, that I would be the one to settle here? It was not simply luck, rather something much greater. HE heard the promise and would lead me to this specific spot.
Once the foundation was completed, the wood framing construction was to the roof in a few months and the structure began to find its outward appearance. I was finally able to graduate from my tent to a mattress on the floor… And I was quite happy to be sleeping in my own home.
In 1986, I met Yvonne, the woman who 'turned a pile of rocks into a home'. We were married here in 1992, and my parents who were both Methodist pastors officiated our ceremony. My parents performed two more family ceremonies over the years, as my sister Carol was married here, and my son Jason was also married at Highlands Castle.
"Jason, I promised that I would build you a castle, I didn't say you wouldn't be helping me!"... So, when Jason was a teenager, he joined in the stonework. Naturally resourceful, he recruited his football teammates to lend some muscle over the summer months. Their daily mantra was "Let's rock!" and they took great pride in their accomplishments while working together again as a team. (Jason was not only an impressive stonemason, but he also went on to earn an Architectural Engineering Degree, and achieve anything he put his mind to).
The stonework was a slow, tedious process and the labor of laying up more than 1,000 tons of local granite would take decades. Over the past 38 years, the property would evolve into what it is today... a series of three castles where families & friends from all over the world gather to create their own special memories.
We hope you'll share our story with your family & friends and you'll have an opportunity to visit us one day!
Kind Regards,
John A. Lavender II and Yvonne Lavender,
owners of Highlands Castle in Bolton Landing, NY
'Our Story' continued...
Often times, good things come out of bad experiences. In 2010 we began sharing our home with others. This was the good that came out of bad. Two years earlier, a fall from the roof resulted in a shattered right ankle and 4-operations. I would spend over 8-months in a wheelchair and on crutches before I could begin taking a few steps again. What emerged from a serious accident was an awareness of how fragile life is. It was time to reinvent myself and start a new chapter... One that I was grateful to have been given.
"If you build it, they will come" was a significant line in one of my favorite movies 'Field of Dreams'. My son volunteered to build a website in 2010... And they did come! Although I never had any plan or intention to rent our home, doing so has given me an opportunity to meet some wonderful and interesting people from all over the world who would share personal stories of how and why they were drawn to travel here. Tales that would make you smile, stories that were very heartwarming. while others were even heartbreaking. Countless visitors would find exactly what they were searching for... sharing precious time and laughter with their loved ones. Many would find peace and relaxation here, others would take time to rejuvenate or heal. And I would find something we all need, a sense of purpose.
When I think back to my words "Someday I will build you a castle", there was always a plan and a purpose. It just wasn't my plan.
Magical weekend in a magical place.
After receiving some fairly bad news, my husband wanted to take me away to a tranquil, peaceful and beautiful place to take my mind away from things. He discovered The Highlands Castle in Boulton Landing. We arrived to a very warm and friendly welcome by the owners. A truly wonderful couple.
I was taken aback by the beauty of The Castle. Every detail from top to bottom. I especially loved the Tiffany glass.
Then you take in the view.
There is not a single place in the Castle where the view is simply stunning.
We spent a great deal of our evenings sitting on the terrace taking in the most incredible view of Lake George.
Breakfast was delicious and dinner plans were a breeze. The Sagamore is a good choice but there are many restaurants in Boulton Landing that are both affordable and delicious.
That did the trick. I came back to the City fully charged
The long weekend at The Highlands Castle was both peaceful and truly magical.
I highly recommended it to anyone that needs to get away from the craziness of the cities.
We look forward to our next visit

Thank you for choosing to stay at Highlands Castle and for sharing your experience with others. Take care of each other and be well. Kind Regards... until next time! John A. Lavender II
So I booked this castle for my husbands birthday which was on jan.It snowed and was raining so the roads turned to black ice. However we called John who is the owner to help us as our car got stuck. He himself slipped a couple of times hurt his back but he walked all the down to get us in. He then got his wife Jeep to take us up. I honestly thank him for taking us up to the castle because he made that most adventurous and memorable moments of our life. He is probably is the best. We couldn’t go down in the black ice to have dinner so his wife made us yummy pasta , bread and beer. We couldn’t have asked for something better. There house is absolutely stunning, the views are spectacular. I am def taking my sisters to that place in April. My other sister is traveling from Australia and that place is worth going to. We loved it. Thanks John for making it a great experience for us.

Sheena & Vipul,
It was a pleasure meeting you, which is likely because you're such a fun & uplifting couple! We're pleased to hear your visit was a great experience (in spite of the unexpected 'black ice'). We look forward to seeing you again in April and the opportunity to meet your sister's next time!
Take care and be well,
John & Yvonne
We just had a wonderful weekend at Highlands Castle 12/1/17-12/3/17. The royal bedroom is lovely. The bathroom tub is dreamy. The castle is beautiful and exactly as pictured, the views are breathtaking. The town was peaceful and quiet. We had breakfast at the Bolton Bean as recommended by our hosts and it was so good. Jennifer & Makayla were so friendly and provided the best service, coffee and food you could ask for. John and Yvonne are outstanding hosts, very kind and accommodating. It's a laid back peaceful vibe at the castle. Great for a nice relaxing weekend. What a blessing this lovely couple welcomes people into their home for this unique experience ♡ Ty, kindly, L&D

Hi Laurie & Dennis,
Thank you again for choosing to stay at Highlands Castle and we were honored to have you celebrate your 22nd anniversary here! We appreciate your wonderful review and hope you'll be back to visit us again one day. Until then, take care of each other and be well.
Kind Regards to a wonderful couple,
John & Yvonne
We had a wonderful time at Highlands Castle. Not only was it beautiful and exactly as pictured, the town was peaceful and quiet. We had breakfast at the Bolton Bean and went back the next day because it was so good. Drove down to Lake George for Sweet Basil dinner, which is our fav. Played tennis down by the beach. John and Yvonne have a peaceful energy that is difficult to put into words--we felt so relaxed all weekend. I will note that we are a same sex couple and were entirely nervous about our reception. I was scared we'd be thrown out--you never know. They were so welcoming and kind, it was a perfect weekend.

Hi Tayo & Michelle,
I'm happy that you had a wonderful time during your stay here. Sharing Highlands Castle with others is as meaningful to me as it is enjoyable for you. I believe you could sense that. Be well & take care, and help give my life purpose, which is my way of saying... don't be afraid to come back!
Kind Regards,
John
Found this gem of a place by a fluke and what a discovery! Absolutely beautiful views with a castle filled with authentic details. The best part-the owner John. You can feel the love he has for his home and family. A sincere man that genuinely welcomes all into his home sharing his love and stories. Unfortunately, I only stayed for 1 night as part of a girls weekend getaway. There was ample space, bedding was comfortable and the views were unparalleled that once we were in Lake George we were not impressed at all by the views there. If you're looking for privacy, comfort, unique views and authenticity-definitely visit Highlands Castle!

I enjoyed meeting your family and I'm glad you found us! Hope we'll see you again in the future! Be well, John
Yes, wow! That is this home in one word! So beautiful and so eloquent! But the view over Lake George is WOW! The amazing view of the lake is one that can not be seen anywhere else. Gorgeous! We felt like we were climbing up to the sky and then there it was; a castle in the clouds! This place is so detailed and unique that you could really feel like a Prince or Princess as you move about the home. The owners are wonderful host and really make you feel comfortable. You have to hear the story of how this amazing place came to be from the owner; builder and host, John.
