John A. Lavender II - owner of Highlands Castle. Highlands Castle was born from a promise I made to my young son... “Someday I’ll build a house where we both will live… a place we’ll call home. A place where you can bring your friends and create special memories… someday Jason I will build you a castle." Looking back to 1978, my 3-year old son would likely have never remembered these words. The promise had more to do with a desire to build a better life, than an actual castle. It would be another 5-years before the ideal property presented itself, a mountaintop in Bolton Landing, NY. While clearing the land for the foundation, a picture was being painted with a chain saw rather than a brush. Within a matter of weeks, the most spectacular view in the world was uncovered. The majesty of Lake George and the Adirondack Mountains seemed as grateful as I was to be unveiled. How was it, that I would be the one to settle here? I believe He heard the promise and lead me to this specific spot. It was not simply luck, this was something much greater. Once the foundation was completed, the wood framing construction was to the roof in a few months and the structure began to find its outward appearance. I finally graduated from the living quarters of a tent to a mattress on the floor, which was fine with me… I was quite happy to be sleeping in my own home. In 1986, I met Yvonne, the woman who 'turned a pile of rocks into a home'. We were married here in 1992, and my parents who were both Methodist pastors officiated our ceremony. (In 2008, my son Jason & Mary would be married at Highlands Castle with his grandparents also officiating their wedding). "Jason, I promised that I would build you a castle, I didn't say you wouldn't be helping me!"... So, when Jason was a teenager, he joined in the stonework. Naturally resourceful, he recruited his football teammates to lend some muscle over the summer months. Their daily mantra was "Let's rock!" and they took great pride in what they accomplished while working together again as a team. (Jason was not only an impressive stonemason, but he also went on to earn an Architectural Engineering Degree, and achieve anything he put his mind to). The stonework was a slow, tedious process and the labor of laying up more than 1,000 tons of local granite would take decades. Over the past 37 years, the property would evolve into what it is today... a series of three castles. In 2010, my wife Yvonne and I decided to make Highlands Castle available so others could experience what our family has been so fortunate to enjoy. Since then, families & friends from all over the world have gathered here to create their own special memories. We hope you'll visit us, too! Poised on a graceful mountainside overlooking majestic Lake George, a castle awaits you...
It is honestly difficult to describe how incredible our stay in John and Yvonne's home was for my husband's 40th birthday. They were so welcoming and clearly enjoy sharing a small piece of their dream with guests. The castle is stunning and while we soaked up every beautiful detail of the interior, we loved watching the sunset and sunrise from the intricate porch but also appreciated having the warmth of the terrace when it got a bit chilly! My husband and I love to travel but this castle was the most whimsical, magical home we have ever visited. We can not wait to come back!

If you are considering staying with John I can’t recommend it enough. The Highland Castle was a a surreal, relaxing, and beautiful destination.
John and his wife we’re fantastic hosts. They were available to us for anything we needed— brought extra linens for us, and went the extra mile by setting up the space for us with little touches like tables and table clothes just to name a few .
If you have the ability to stay at this here, you yourself a favor and book it!! I can’t wait to come back to this piece of heaven on earth. Thanks again for a wonderful weekend!

The castle is very unique and great experience. Easy access to Lake George and local entertainment. Views from the castle overlooking Lake George are amazing. We had great few nights there.

It is extremely rare to find a location that exceeds expectations, one that is even more beautiful than the pictures posted online. This property, location, and host... these are the exceptions to that rule.
Our stay over the long holiday weekend was absolutely perfect and more than I could have ever expected.
If you appreciate castles, architecture, great hospitality, nature, small towns with wonderful food and people, or even just a picturesque view and a comfortable bed - this is the place for you!
I’ve done my fair share of traveling, and as a designer I have pretty high standards for where I stay, so simply put, I HIGHLY recommend visiting any one of John’s locations. You will not be disappointed!
If you get the chance, I also recommend chatting with John. A truly genuine man with a deep appreciation and connection to the immersive world he has created in Highland Castle.
An experience you will never forget.

A review, such as yours, simply reinforces the decision we made... To share our property with others. We have been fortunate to meet the most extraordinary people in the world. It just happened again... you (and your friends) showed up.
Very nice hosts but the place is not what I expected. Too much advertizing for nothing really. The kings suit is nothing but old movie theater basement room that is not connect to the main castle. Expensive and not worth it.

Hi Daria,
We were sad to read your review, especially after doing our best to assure your family a memorable experiece.
Somehow you thought 'The King's Suite' was connected to the main castle and gave you access to areas of the castle where other guests were staying (it does not).
You then requested that we ask the guests in 'The Castle Cottage' to switch spaces with your family (which would have been unethical).
As an alternative, we offered your family 'The King's Suite', plus the use of The Great Hall in the main castle, plus a complimentary stayover in 'The Royal Bedroom' in the main castle... which you ultimately declined?
Knowing we did all we could to make you happy, we wish you well.
Respectfully,
John A. Lavender II
owner of Highlands Castle
A castle built by the owner's own hands. An almost impossible to imagine feat. Absolutely incredible! Views are breathtaking, our Kings Suite was huge and comfortable and fit for well...a king. Comfortable bed, loving living room, our own patio overlooking Lake George. Amazing.
John gave us a tour of the main house. The craftsmanship is spectacular and it is filled with gorgeous stained glass and massive sculptures of men in armor carved out of a single poplar tree. John was warm and welcoming. He helped us find a great realtor as we begin to explore buy our own "castle" up here. Ok, well, not a castle but maybe like a cute cottage!
Highlands Castle is a perfect romantic retreat, family get away, or place to host a celebration. For whatever reason you can dream up, just go. And next time you feel like something you are working on is too hard or taking too long, just think of John. He built his own castle over 30 years through sheer will, focus, vision, and tenacity! Inspiring and humbling.

Sally,
I'm grateful for your thoughtful review. Although I designed and worked on much of the construction, it would not have evolved without the effort of some talented craftsmen to whom I am thankful, including my son Jason who was my inspiration, and my wife Yvonne who made it a 'home'. I am the most grateful knowing it is HIS hand who steered the vision throughout the years and made everything possible, while giving a place that sits on top of a mountain, and my life, purpose.
A majestic castle with miles of lake views. Unforgettable experience! Already planning a return trip.
