About Patrick McGowan
About the Owners: Birchwood Cottages is family owned and operated by Patrick and Margo McGowan and Jenn & Steve Hazelton, under our LLC, ADK Birchwood. Patrick & Margo McGowan, and Steve & Jenn Hazelton have loved the Adirondack Park for decades and had been searching for the perfect spot to make their own in the Adirondacks. Margo and Patrick have always been drawn to the park; they were engaged in Brant Lake (just down the road) and married in Lake Placid, and vacationed in the ADKs just about every year since then. Jenn and Steve were becoming quite the Adirondack groupies, scouring property and vacationing in various spots within the blue line for years and years, it was time to put down some roots.
Patrick McGowan purchased this House in 2015
Why Patrick McGowan chose Chestertown
How we came to love Birchwood: Margo had known about Birchwood Cottages for about 15 years, as she went to college with the previous owner's daughter, and had visited Birchwood a few times throughout her college days. In years passed, she had always toyed with the idea of buying Birchwood – but considered it pipe dreams at best. In the summer of 2015, the McGowan came to Birchwood to have a mini college reunion with her friends and classmates, and it was then, that the timing was right to call Birchwood home! After a quick discussion with Art and Jill Spierre, and a seemingly short drive for Jen and Steve to check the place out, a handshake sealed the deal. The Hazelton’s and McGowan’s spent the summer back and forth to Birchwood, and in discussions with Art and Jill, and were finally able to call Birchwood theirs in September 2015.
Our goal is to keep Birchwood as a family-friendly vacation spot for our loyal guests AND NEW ONES, so they too can call Birchwood home (if even for a week or 2) for years and years to come!
What makes this House unique:
Birchwood Cottages is a delightful set of cottages, and one large main house (The Lodge), settled on the west shore of Loon Lake surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains. The cottages can be rented by the week and include a nice sandy beach for the kids to play and swim. Our swimming area is easily accessible by steps that lead to a sandy gradual walk-in, and include a floating dock.
Loon Lake is a nicely tucked away little treasure in Chestertown, NY. There are multitudes of activities to do for a day trip- or never leave the beach- whichever you prefer. Full-service marina located across the lake for all of your boating needs and our large boat docks can accommodate any size boat!
I have been searching for the perfect place for our annual ski trip to Adirondacks for our growing family. My search is over! The Lodge met all our needs. We are a family that loves to cook, and the kitchen was so spacious we all had our own area to prepare our part. We were able to gather around the fireplace and play games and the chess players had an area that was always at the ready. The beds were comfortable and everyone had one! The skiers were pleased the drive to Gore was under a 1/2 hour and the hikers loved the endless trails behind the camp. Margo was very helpful and always quick to respond. We have found our reunion home!

We stayed in the Lodge. It had plenty of space for 12 of us to gather. The master bedroom is huge with two attached small rooms with full size beds. It was an extravagant amount of space for my wife and I and our two kids. The house is well stocked with board games and the attached rec room kept the kids entertained. The beach was very nice and had a small boat, paddle boat, and plenty of sand toys for the kids.
Patrick was on site and extremely helpful. Our group turned out to be smaller than originally planned and he allowed us to cancel our associated cottage reservation
Overall great place and we plan to return to the lodge mid winter for skiing.

What a perfect retreat this house was. My group and I very much enjoyed our stay here, we are already planning another trip sometime this fall to see how gorgeous it is with all the fall foliage. The house was spacious, clean, and just perfect for a large group of people.

We had a great time with many guests and only
complaint is we couldn’t stay longer! Couple WiFi repeaters in the house provided good coverage for the one rainy day we had but the weather seems to clean up quick on the lake. Dock and beach are right across the street. Kitchen well stocked with utensils and microwave and an oven and cooktop. Great fridge freezer. Grill missing igniter but otherwise everything else was stellar. Dedicated fire pit and ample seating in and out. Maybe they could add lighting beyond kitchen island towards grill /deck side but it’s really not a factor. Beach has been shored up or eroded over the decades according to previous guests but it’s plenty big for the number of guests to hang out, dock, step into water from. Kayaks and paddle boat and noodles and umbrellas were there for use. Great times and highly recommended

We had our family vacation here and had a great time. Home was very nice and had plenty of room for the 9 of us. Would rent again.
Stayed June, 2019
The location of the property is very convinient for skiers who want to visit Gore Mountain which is approximately 20 min away and Whiteface Mountain is about 1h and 15 min away. Owners are really kind and easy to communicate with. Definitely would rent this house again.
Stayed December, 2018
Clean, very nice. Would go back.
Stayed September, 2018
We enjoyed our stay at The Lodge. There was plenty of space for our family of 13. The view was amazing.
The only downfalls were the very busy road in front of property crossing to swimming area. Very heavy traffic with large logging trucks both day and night. Beds were sufficient but not very comfortable. Having three bathrooms was great, however master jet tub did not work. Bringing all trash to local dump was inconvenient, should be provided by onsite property maintenance.
The attached game room was a plus for the kids. The private swimming area was also great for the kids. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.
