The perfect Getaway!

One can't possibly describe how wonderful the owners are, you have to experience the place for yourself to believe it. The property is kept very clean and inviting and having Sheila next door guarantees your every need is met and advice on what to do in the area is from a local full time resident and guide (can't hope for more!)

The trails on the property offer a quick outing opportunity while nearby trail heads offer more extensive trips into Adirondack backcountry. If you like watching wildlife, all you have to do is gaze out of a window in the morning and you're practically guaranteed a sighting.

The quite, private and wooded setting gives the feeling of remoteness while a trip to town or grocery store does not take much more than an hour.

Everything perfect!

Beautiful home, perfect site, perfect location, quiet, peaceful, restful, centrally located to trails and other ADK sites and MOST ACCOMMODATING owners! The home was very clean and well maintained and well stocked (kitchen - spices and tools, bathroom, towels, games, books, and even marshmallow roasting sticks!!! And many activity brochures and trail maps). We have already recommended it to friends and family. It was a perfect home away from home for our family of 6. We would recommend new comers to ADK area to start the vacation at the Paul Smith VIC.

Great Gift Idea

Believe the reviews, Folks! This place is a gem! It is so lovely and so well cared for.

I tend to be a bit fanatical when it comes to the cleanliness of accomodations. No worries here! Everything was spotless!

The kitchen was such a pleasure to work in. It was wonderfully supplied, including full sets of dishes, wine glasses, various spices, even a blender and electric mixer. You really don't have to bring anything from your own kitchen!

I also don't appreciate hosts who hover and are intrusive. Again, no worries! Bob and Sheila were the perfect hosts; there, if you needed them, and so very pleasant, helpful and honest.

When I walked into the grand room and saw the welcoming fire in the cast iron woodstove, and the bottle of complimentary maple syrup that is produced on the property with a cordial note of welcome, I was hooked!

Our three day winter get-away was a Christmas gift from our daughter, Leslie and her partner, Doug. Thank you, guys. Nice find!

Thank you, Sheila and Bob. We will be back!

What you see is what you get!!!

This was our first time renting a vacation home. I have to say, I was very skeptical about the whole ordeal. But my sister-in-law was insistent that we get together somewhere snowy for Christmas. We could not have had any better first experience renting a home than this. Sheila is very prompt and thorough in replying to any questions you may have before arriving at the property and continues to be very enthusiastic in offering help or suggestions while at the property. We showed up, a bit earlier than check in, to find Sheila building a fire in the wood stove for our arrival. To our amazement, the pictures displayed are very accurate. This Adirondack home is nicely decorated, uncluttered and has many quaint touches. The property is VERY clean and well maintained. The home is warm and cozy with the wood stove burning and/or separate thermostats in each room for every ones individual preference. The winding driveway was kept plowed during our stay, but we were glad we had a four wheel drive vehicle to navigate it. Sheila suggested Mt Titus for us to go skiing. It was probably about a 25 minute drive. It was perfect for us amateur skiers. One day we just explored around the outside of the home and found the sledding hill Sheila had told us about. It was a blast!! We made a couple trips to Lake Placid which was about a 40 minute drive. We have learned this property has many return guests, of which we may now be one of too!

Would Come Back In a Heart Beat!

I'd come back in a heart beat- not because of what the surroundings offer- other houses in the area have that too. But for the human touch: the house feels like a home. It's clean, comfortable and inviting. Sheila went out of her way to attend to every little detail to make our stay enjoyable. If she could control the weather, she would. Thanks!

Great ADK Getaway

Great for a family vacation in the woods with all the amenities. Big upgrade from the lean-to's we normally stay at! Large enough for 2 families. Property was updated and very well maintained. Sheila and Bob were great hosts, thanks for making us feel right at home! The week flew by as our days were filled with fishing, hiking, canoeing and swimming, not to mention the best campfire pit around. Will return again, hopefully this winter so we can ski right out the door.

Annual Mens Weekend in the Woods

We have been coming to Camp Hatteras for a long Fall weekend retreat for the past 11 years. Whoops, thats not true! One year we tried somewhere else but then decided to come back to the Camp. Each of these years 5 to 7 men come to hike in the woods, tell stories (some true), have conversations about things that matter to us, cook food together, read/write/draw, listen to music, and generally hangout. The place works out just great for us. It's comfortable, efficient and has the kind of semi-rustic atmosphere we like. It has the grand room for us to be all together and 3 bedrooms and a loft spread out for solitude. There is a campfire area that's looks like its belongs on the cover of a travel brochure. The setting is Adirondack scenic, tucked away in a white pine forest. Its is close enough to Saranac Lake if you really need something. The VIC and Paul Smith college are 10 minutes away . There is a great little restaurant a mile or so down the road whose name escapes me. The owners live nearby and have been able to help us with just about anything you can imagine. There are many trails and mountains to climb nearby. We have rarely repeated where we go for our day trips. We've hiked Azure more than once. There are also lots of lakes and streams nearby for kayakers and canoers Overall its a great place to getaway from it all and have some adventures in the woods.

I was lucky to come across Camp Hatteras!

I was extremely lucky to come across Camp Hatteras!

I was looking for a house to rent in the Adirondacks that was quite, and close by some mountains and hiking trails. Camp Hatteras was perfect for both of these goals!

The surroundings were completely quite. You do not see or hear any neighbors. The house is surrounded by many acres of beautiful pine forest, you have complete privacy.

Besides there being some trails in the back of the house, there are two mountains and several beautiful trails (in the VIC) just a 10 minute ride from the house!

There were dozens of trails and lakes all within an hours drive from the house.

Lake Saranac is only 20 minutes away and Lake Placid is only 40 minutes away.

The house was impeccably clean. I stayed for 5 weeks from mid-Aug to mid-Sept and I did not see "one" insect in the house for the entire 5 weeks!! That is highly unusual if you think that this house is in the middle of the woods!!

The house is very comfortable and there was plenty of heat and hot water. The kitchen was fully implemented and there is a clothes washer and dryer. Wrap around deck with adirondack chairs, and screened in porch.

Sheila and Bob are WONDERFUL hosts and helped me with my various logistic and hiking questions and were always available for any help! The business end of this transaction was trouble free! No misrepresentations, no bait and switch, no problems of any type!

If you want comfortable and beautiful surroundings for your Adirondacks trip, I could not recommend Camp Hatteras more!

Camp Hatteras Ironman Week

Our family had a great time at Camp Hatteras. Lake Placid is a 35 minute drive away (Saranac Lake is 15) and beautiful views of the mountains are enjoyed during the ride. The house is clean and comfortable and Sheila is a pleasure to work with start to finish. Fishing, hiking, paddling, golfing and sightseeing is all convenient to the house. Stories and memories were fun for all during the evening campfires. It is a great place for a busy family vacation doing all that is available or to just relax and take in the peace and quiet that surrounds Camp Hatteras. We will recommend Camp Hatteras to our family and friends.

Get away from it all.

Sure, Camp Hatteras has everything you need – full kitchen, washing machine, TV, log burner, wrap-around deck, etc. etc. Sure, Sheila and Bob can and will offer advice about all sorts of things that you can do in the great outdoors, right on your doorstep. But there is something else, something more than all that, a feeling you can’t describe in words, a feeling like home.

We (Jane and Matthew from Wales) have stayed twice so far, but hope there will be many more stays in this corner of the Adirondacks. Our passion is for hiking and the area is amazing for this, Sheila is also a keen hiker and will offer advice on exactly what to do – or you can just refer to the numerous reference books in the cabin.

A typical day for us at Camp Hatteras will include: getting up and making coffee and breakfast while we plan the days adventures, there is a handy weather station to forecast the weather for you. Heading out for a days hiking, maybe climbing one (or more) of the 46 high peaks of the Adirondacks. Back for a hearty meal and a well deserved bottle of beer before settling down for the evening (while the dishwasher washes the dishes) on the porch or deck if the weather is warm or in the cabin with a log fire on cooler evenings. We don’t watch the TV – we don’t really want to know what is going on in the outside world, so we amuse ourselves with games of Scrabble and chats about the day’s adventures.

Camp Hatteras makes an excellent vacation base and we can thoroughly recommend it.
