Nice Home for a Weekend Away
We were looking for a little adventure on a little budget and were all excited to rendezvous in the Adirondacks for a mid-autumn family retreat. Melissa's Woodland Home sounded like a great place for 5 adults and our small dog to enjoy some time away.
The photos and description of the home are fairly accurate. But, if you are visiting in the off-seasons and night temps are below 55°, you may need to bring/secure space heaters for the two bedrooms on the ground floor. It's pretty cold down there all of the time - day and night. The beds are *very* firm, which may be an issue for anyone with back or hip issues.
Melissa did put a fluffy dog bed out and left a treat for our four-footed family member.
Most everything in the home is functional and well-maintained. Melissa has put a great deal of care & time into listing & labeling things in the home. And her house guide is very thorough. She sent an extensive email a week before we were to arrive, and called as well to confirm details. She also made a point of coming over to meet us our first day there.
If you do not travel in the area regularly or know people who live nearby, you may be surprised by the limited access you'll have to the lakefront without driving to a commercial area. Most of the waterfront is privately owned and well marked with signs deterring people who do not live in the immediate area. As we were there outside of the normal vacation season we did not encounter any direct hostility from local residents, but there is plenty of signage intended to keep 'the riff-raff' away - that was the explanation given when we asked about lake access (not sure who that would include normally).
We planned to keep to ourselves most of the weekend and did not visit any local restsurants or popular attractions. We did spend a great deal of time hiking nearby, reading, cooking/eating and playing games.
