About Dina Kushnir
I fell in love with the land and bought it knowing it needs a lot of work. a year later I am happy to share it with others. I call it 'Olive Oasis' it is an Oasis of Peace from the outside world. I am a movement artist and use Olive Oasis to teach meditation, yoga and personal growth workshops. I see this place also as a retreat space for artists, writers and nature lovers together with family that enjoy indoor outdoor magic.
Dina Kushnir purchased this Chalet in 2011
Why Dina Kushnir chose Shokan?
I was looking into the Woodstock area for two main reason, one it being close to New York City where I live just two hours away and I am in a different land. The other reason is the beauty of the mountains and the woods with skiing , hiking, swimming and enjoying nature in so many more ways, all available and close by. The peace and quiet drew me and my meditation practice enriched by the land.
What makes this Chalet unique?
I love the peace and quiet and the view from the back deck, just to sit there read, watch the trees, the deers, and the sun set over the mountain, I also enjoy the fine restaurants and shops of Woodstock area. I hike and walk along the Ashokan Reservoir and cross country ski on the road by my house. Mostly I enjoy the quiet and the changing beauty in every season.
This listing is no longer even remotely accurate. Almost every single photo posted of the backyard space is outdated. From where you see the rock step patio, there is no green space behind it, it’s now a construction site with a half-built house. The old barn “earth temple” was torn down and replaced with an incomplete home, with the rubble from said barn left sloppily (and dangerously!) off to the side of a walkway of dirt and mud. We had our dog with us, and had to be sure he was staying clear of boards of wood with nails sticking out of them, or into the rusted and poorly maintained barbed wire surrounding the property, which we were also completely unaware would exist.
If you are willing to walk through the construction site, you can find some poorly maintained green space further out, with a lot of overgrowth and tricky, loose rocks to look out for underfoot. However, to think you will be surrounded by green, walkable space is completely false and misleading on the owner’s part. All you will see from the hot tub is the woods to the left, the patio to the right, and the construction site ahead of you. That’s also the only view you get from the back deck, the yoga room windows & the rock patio/firepit area. The entire view is eaten by this new construction. You cannot see the sunset over the mountains as claimed, you can’t even see mountains from the property.
So, what was meant to be a secluded getaway with tons of green outdoor space was anything but, and I feel outright deceived by the owner. It is not as though she is unaware of the fact that she is building on the property, or that she had removed/changed things she had on her listing. She made absolutely no mention of any of this before gladly taking our payment, and I am honestly disgusted by the whole ordeal. We paid full price (over the nightly average for the listing) for HALF the property/experience! THIS LISTING IS FALSE ADVERTISING!! If I could post photos to prove it, I absolutely would.
It is also worth mentioning that there is a strong sulfur smell that comes from the hot water tap (mentioned in another review, owner falsely claimed it was remedied), and the hot tub has a faint mildew smell around it (not sure if it was the cover or the tub/water). I did not bother contacting the owner as we were truly disgusted by her antics, and it’s not as though she was able to remove an entire home from the property to make right her wrongs. So greedy.

No problem at all.

Dina has created such a beautiful and inviting space. You can tell that she’s put a lot of thought and intention into making the space feel special and open. We had a bachelorette “retreat” where we enjoyed the fire pit, nights in the hot tub (the best part!), and Woodstock and apple picking during the day. The kitchen was well stocked with modern appliances and lots of pans and dishes for cooking meals.
Another reviewer mentioned the construction. While it was different from the photos, it didn’t impair our views or experience. The property is large, so there were a lot of outdoor spaces for us to enjoy.

Upon turning 50, I headed up to the mountains with a few girlfriends to celebrate. We grilled, hiked Peekamoose Mountain, enjoyed downtown, relaxed on the patios as the sun set, soaked in the hot tub, watched Netflix, chilled by the fire pit at night & enjoyed an early outdoor yoga practice before we left the Olive Oasis. What a delightful weekend with friends.

Beautiful place, inside and out.

I and my writers' group came here for a few days to focus on our work for a while, and this was the perfect site. The property extends for quite a ways in one direction, and there are stone-marked paths through it that end in little meditation nooks everywhere. The house itself is lovely and well-kept. The only not-so-great thing was the low water pressure in the shower, but for a few days it was fine. We all got lots of writing done, and came home refreshed and recharged. Very recommended!

We really enjoyed our stay at Olive Oasis. The house was clean and well maintained. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. The location is nice and secluded on a dead end street so very little traffic.
About 20 minutes or so drive to Woodstock so close enough but still away from it all.
I can't comment on the hot tub because we didn't get a chance to use it but it was certainly a nice-to-have.
Dina was very easy to work with and we hope to return again soon!

Booking - response was fast, payment was simple and the instructions were detailed and clear.
The Basics - the accommodation was as advertised and everything worked, kitchen well stocked, comfortable beds, pleasantly decorated, spacious & relaxing interior, open, comfortable and well lit living space with plenty of natural light.
The Location - nestled in the woods, plenty of privacy and truly a little slice of "back to nature". A short drive to get groceries plus a small selection of restaurants and diners. The Chocolate store in Shokun is worth a visit too...
The hot tub is worth a mention, lovely to bask in the warm water with a great view with snow all around. There is also a great outside decked area with plenty of seating for warmer months with a small fire pit for chilly evenings.
Overall - would definitely recommend this for a short or longer stay if you want to chill out in comfort, a lovely cozy and friendly environment with everything you need to enjoy staying in or exploring the area.
