Morning Glory Inn
Great Country Lodge for large groups near Chautauqua. Great Value.

July 2021 – We really enjoyed the Morning Glory Inn

Six couples plus one more adult shared the Morning Glory Inn (6+ bedroom, 6 bath) situated on a country road 3 miles east of Bemus Point, NY in the hills surrounding Chautauqua Lake. We stayed for a week and our visit coincided with week 5 of the Chautauqua Institution summer season.

Bottom Line: The property is as better than advertised. Over the years our group of friends has rented dozens of homes in the cities and the countryside in many states. The Morning Glory Inn near Lake Chautauqua is one of the best properties when it comes to accommodations and value for a group like ours. We highly recommend this property for gatherings of families and friends.

BEDROOMS: There are two bedroom suites downstairs and four bedrooms on the second floor plus an additional 7th small bedroom with 3 small beds (no adjoining bath) above the second floor living room. Each of the six main bedrooms has an attached bathroom, however, two of the bedrooms on the second floor share a bath (Jack & Jill setup).
One downstairs suite is off the back of the main living room and is the only bedroom accessible with no stairs – all other bedrooms have some stairs. The other downstairs suite is very large and located off the end of the living room down a couple stairs.
The second floor has two large suites with private bathrooms. One of these includes a spiral stairway (within the bedroom) leading to a separate attic room with additional small beds (perfect for a family). The second floor also has two bedrooms that share one bath between them in a “Jack & Jill” setup.

BATHROOMS: Four of the main bedroom suites have their own private baths and 2 bedrooms on the second floor share a “Jack & Jill” on suite bathroom. The 7th “bonus” small attic bedroom does not contain a bathroom. There is a half bath off the living room on the first floor for everyone to use.

LAUNDRY: The laundry is off the lower suite near that suite’s bathroom, but that suite is so large that laundry access does not intrude on the bedroom.

PUBLIC SPACE: There was ample public space for 6+ couples in our party. The main living room with TV is on the first floor which has a two-story ceiling (with fan) and with two couches and several comfy chairs was a favorite hangout area. A more secluded secondary living room was on the second floor off the stairs. The poker table located there became our “work center” for those who needed a quieter space to check in with the office. This secondary living room also contained a seating area and a TV. The public areas included 4 dining/sitting tables one of which is a poker table and another which we dedicated to puzzles. The largest table in the dining room sat 11-12 of us together when we shared several home cooked meals. The home was large enough that you needed to go looking for each other, even when all thirteen of us were there together. My favorite public space – the porch overlooking the pond and grounds on the back of the house. We had our coffee up there (accessed by exterior spiral staircase) every morning – a beautiful way to start the day. You will need to set up a few of your own folding chairs unless the owner moves some of the Adirondack chairs up there.

KITCHEN: The kitchen was large enough for many cooks to work at once and included two separate sink areas. There were plenty of plates, bowls, utensils, glasses, coffee mugs and serving implements. All appliances worked great and the second refrigerator (in the kitchen) came in handy for beer and soft drinks. A outdoor grill in good working order is available in the driveway near the garage. We settled on getting our groceries at Tops Market in Mayville, but there are many choices in the area.

CLEANLINESS and MAINTENANCE: The house had been thoroughly cleaned prior to our arrival. No one in our group noticed anything amiss. The property was well maintained – everything was in good order and repair. The owner obviously cares for the lodge and lives close by on the property.
GROUNDS: We all loved walking the property. The pond and fields were gorgeous – an idyllic country retreat. We played Bocce Ball regularly – a challenge in the undulating grass – but lots of fun.

PARKING: You’re in the country. There is ample space for parking cars and our 7 vehicles were easily accommodated in the driveway’s parking spaces.

OWNER: The owner lives in his separate private residence next to the lodge and is attentive if you have any issues or questions. Our group is fairly self-sufficient, and we intruded on our host as little as possible.

TIPS: Summer guests Tips –
#1. Chautauqua Institution – Take in a show: Review the online Chautauqua Institution Event Schedule and purchase tickets to events in advance of your visit (we saw Lewis Black at the Chautauqua Amphitheater), use the FREE daily online “Destination Passes” to take advantage of the businesses, venues, and grounds at the Chautauqua Institution. My new happy place is having a few drinks sitting lakeside in Adirondack chairs at 3Taps under the Chautauqua Institution clocktower on a sunny afternoon. Visit the St. Elmo Spa near the commons on the Chautauqua Institution grounds for a manicure or a massage (our group did both). Don’t forget to stop by the Chautauqua Bookstore, the Ice Cream Parlor, and hanging out on the porch on the Athenaeum Hotel.
#2. Get on the Water. Kayak – Rent a Kayak at Evergreen Outfitter in Mayville and go find the Big Inlet. It’s a great paddle and, no, you can’t reach The Big Inlet Brewery in a kayak. Or just take the Chautauqua Belle out of Mayville and enjoy the ride.
#3. Hang Out in Bemus Point. Lots of beautiful restaurants including… Ellicottville Brewery, The Lenhart Hotel (sitting in the rockers), The Fish on the lower back deck (or the outer floating bar by way of gangplank).
#4. Take in the music. Pops festivals (Mayville Lakeside Park), Breweries and Restaurants have live music, and be sure to see who is performing at the Chautauqua Amphitheater.
#5. Breakfast at the Bemus Point Inn and the Lake Life Café.
#6. Take in the sights. Comedy Museum in Jamestown. Panama nature area, Tory Peterson Birding Institute. Westfield (great little city to the north), Visit the towns of Lakewood, Mayville and of course, Bemus Point.
