Annual Events in the Lake Placid Region:

The Lake Placid region hosts many varied and highly attended annual events.  Here are some of the biggest and best  annual events in Lake Placid New York.

Lake Placid Ironman :  Lake Placid hosts the longest-running Ironman competition in North America.  A triathlon of swimming, biking and running, this grueling event will next take place in July.  Attended by thousands of athletes and spectators from around the world, lodging can sell out as much as a year in advance.

Lake Placid and I Love New York Horse Shows:  The Lake Placid region is known for Horse Shows.  In fact, 2019 will mark the 50th Annual Lake Placid Horse Show.  That event is followed by the I Love New York Horse Show, which takes place typically in July.  If you are a fan of the hunter or show jumping, these events bring world-class riders to the region and are not to be missed. Can/Am Rugby Tournament: Over 100 teams converge on Saranac Lake and Lake Placid for the annual Can/Am Rugby Tournament.  The tournament has been held for over 40 years and happens in August.

Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain:   Break out the lederhosen.  Oktoberfest at Whiteface Mountain is a popular annual event.  Experience authentic German dining, beer, and entertainment.  Ride the Cloudsplitter gondola and soak in the sights of the beautiful fall foliage.

I Love BBQ and Music Festival:   A unique opportunity to watch the top BBQ masters in the country compete.  Sample the best of the best in BBQ while enjoying 3-days of live music.  This annual festival takes place in early July. 

Getting to the Lake Placid Region:

Getting to the Lake Placid Region isn’t easy but it is well worth it.  There are a couple of nearby airports, but they are very small.  Your best bet is to arrive by car.

  • Plane  –  ​The closest place to fly to is Plattsburgh or Albany. Plattsburgh is just over an hour from Lake Placid and Albany is about 2-1/2 hours away.  From there you will need to access your destination by bus, train, or car. Other, smaller flight options include taking a private or corporate aircraft directly into Lake Placid Airport. There is also non-stop service via Cape Air commuter service from Boston's Logan Airport into Adirondack Regional Airport. Adirondack Regional Airport is a 20-minute drive to Lake Placid.
  • ​​Bus  -  Adirondacks Trailways offers service from New York City, Port Authority Terminal and bus terminal points North, with drop-off in the center of Lake Placid and Saranac Lake.
  • Train - Railway access via Amtrak is available from New York, Albany, and Montreal, with tickets that include a shuttle ride to Lake Placid direct from the Westport Station. 
  • Car  - The best way to travel to the Adirondacks is by car. Rental cars can be found in Lake Placid/Saranac, Plattsburgh, and Albany.

​Travel within the Lake Placid Region :

  • Taxis – There are taxi services in the region, however, they receive mixed reviews, so do your homework if you plan to rely on taxicabs.
  • Uber/Lyft – Ridesharing services Uber and Lyft list service in the Lake Placid region, but this is a new service, and it is unknown how many drivers are active.
  • Trolley – Placid XPRSS is Lake Placid Village's free public transit system. This service runs the circuit through the business areas in the town of Lake Placid.
