Hey upstate lovers!
The Phoenicia Hideaway is owned and operated 100% LOCALLY by your hostess Amy, and I can't wait to help you experience our wonderful town! Rental houses are easy enough to find, but wouldn't you rather stay somewhere that feels like home? My place offers you a cozy and well-stocked home with lots of room to sprawl out when you are in escape mode. I have truly set up my place as YOUR ideal getaway pad!
Greetings to all from the heart of the breathtaking Catskill Park, where you are cordially invited to come hit the slopes, curl up with a book, music or movie, cuddle with your favorite puppy or person, go adventuring, start your great American novel, or take in the still, starry skies and pink and purple sunsets.
Come hideaway in beautiful Phoenicia! Just a few hundred feet from the wildly picturesque, trout filled Esopus creek, you'll find a special spot where lasting memories are made. In a wonderful location near every recreational opportunity, the Catskills has to offer, the Hideaway is equally ideal for romantic getaways (proudly the spot of a few recent engagements, congrats to the happy couples!) as well as family vacations, gatherings of friends, or solo adventurers. Countless guests have complimented the house's coziness and comfy vibes, along with its quiet and private nature, thanks largely due to the trees and mature hedges surrounding the perimeter of the property and its very beautiful and lush park-like yard. It is so relaxing to sit outside on one of the swings or chaise lounges, or to open up the windows and listen to the sounds of nature and the roaring creek.
The house’s decor has retro flair but with a clean and stylish contemporary feeling, exuding warmth and homeyness. Shimmering natural light fills the house, adding to its airy nature. Families also seem to appreciate how much room there is for the kids to spread out, and how even the family dog is welcome to join the fun! Please see guest access for more doggie guest info. If romance is in the air, how about blazing fire in the pit under starry skies after dining al fresco in the gazebo? The well-stocked kitchen is a joy to cook in, and coffee lovers, since life without good coffee is not a life I can imagine at all, you'll find waiting for you good beans, a grinder, a French press, as well as a traditional drip brewing pot. Have it outside, or in the sun-filled dining room. The Hideaway is full of modern amenities like fast wifi and a large screen smart TV where you can log into Netflix and such with ease, but also has lots of sweet little homey touches too sprinkled around the house. For some old-school downtime, make sure to check out my extensive collection of classic board games and a large library of books on the Catskills and Hudson Valley.
You'll hopefully find my place to live up to its name and a special place you can recharge and reconnect, with nature, yourself and with others. The bridge leading to the storied and very beautiful Woodland Valley area is nestled just steps around the bend. You'll also have lovely mountain views in almost all of the windows from the house. Relaxing and fun at any time of the year, this is without question a four season retreat! If you're heading to town for a wedding, the Hideaway is just ten minutes to the Emerson, Foxfire House, and Mt. Tremper Arts, and convenient to many of the other area popular wedding sites.
This is also a very good place for a quiet retreat. Menla and the Zen Mountain Monastery are nearby. I'd also be happy to recommend good local spots for yoga, acupuncture, massage or a spa day, and I'll gladly share my most meditative walking spots, just ask. Some of them are heavily wooded old carriage roads where you can walk in the footsteps of John Burroughs. Good news skiers, Hunter Mountain, Bellayre, and Plattekill ski areas are all short drives from the house, and Windham isn't that much further. Lots of options around too for snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and winter hiking. Hikers will be in paradise. Some of the finest trails in the Catskills are close by including Slide Mountain, Giant Ledge, Pantherkill, Devils Path, Mt. Tremper, Overlook, and so many more.
Phoenicia is home to an easy to moderate short hike, the Tanbark Trail, that leads to an idyllic vista of our town. More experienced hikers may wish to check out the local trailhead for the famed Long Path, only about a ten minute walk from the Hideaway, and the famed hiking trails of nearby Woodland Valley are about a ten minute drive. And there are countless other outdoor recreational options.
You can walk just two minutes from the house to the mighty Esopus, one of the major tributaries feeding into the New York City water supply system, and find access right there off the bridge for swimming and world class fly fishing. The super fun Rail Explorers rail bike attraction is also a stone's throw from the house, and so is the Town Tinker for tube rentals! If you're coming up to check out the area's amazing food scene, the house is close to some of the finest dining in the Catskill Park region including the Peekamoose, Phoenicia Diner, the Pines, the Deer Mountain Inn, the Prospect at Scribners, and many more. Breakfast fans will be in heaven too, with Sweet Sue's just two minutes away, or have it on the patio at the Emerson. If you want to know where to get donuts cooked to order too, I've got your back.
Two wonderful craft breweries are also close by, Woodstock Brewing and West Kill Brewery. If you're interested in checking out the local spirits scene, outstanding local vodka and cider distilleries are not too far afield either! Phoenicia has shops and restaurants galore, but you can take day trips to the other happening towns in the Catskill and Hudson Valley regions too. It's also just a 20-minute drive to the most famous small town in America, Woodstock, with its quaint village green and live music scene.
Make sure to check out our outstanding local theater, the Phoenicia Playhouse, and our two fantastic art galleries, often the sites of fun openings. Book far ahead for the amazing Phoenicia Festival of the Voice, where you can hear gorgeous operas under the stars. And there are countless other opportunities for culture in the region. We have great rock venues too, from little dives to large halls. If all of this isn't enough, farm stands and antique stores can be found dotting Route 28, along with no shortage of fab yard sales from spring through fall. The community here is also fantastic and full of fine, interesting people.

They seem very happy in the large yard, and being walked on our trails and country roads.
Bring the family dog along BUT please ask when making your reservation and kindly let me know the breed/size. The fee is usually $30 a night but is reduced for longer stays. Your pooches are not allowed on the furniture and they may not be left alone in the house unless crated. And when outside, please clean up after your pet. Though we love cats and other animals, they are not permitted.
You'll have all the space you need and total run of the house and property but if you need help with anything, I live locally, just a few minutes away, and have an emergency back up person on hand too. Messages best for anything non-urgent, but I'm also just a phone call away for anything really important. I enjoy sharing local info and if you have needs or interests not addressed in the guide book on this page where all of my favorite local places are described, just ask!
I'm very knowledgeable about the area. In my day job, I am a local realtor, specializing in second homes, and I'm always happy to answer any questions about the local real estate scene upon request! You may not be surprised to hear that vacation rentals are one of my specialties, with many of the homes I have sold being enjoyed by their owners as second homes and also as Airbnbs! The Hideaway sits on a quiet residential street about two minutes by car from the village, or you can take a very scenic twenty minute creekside walk there. Make sure to cross the bridge and walk down High Street though, walking on Route 28 is not advisable! The neighborhood surrounding the house is really charming, and quite beautiful, with views of the mountains and water that are breathtaking.
You might see a bald eagle flying overhead, a family of deer or wild turkeys, or a myriad of other wildlife. The surrounding homes in my neighborhood are resided in by both year-round and second homeowners and renters. It feels like a real neighborhood, and it is. You'll have all the privacy you like in the house and enclosed yard, but if you walk around, you are bound to come across some of our locals and visitors, as it is all about being outside here! The house itself feels very private but not secluded. It offers the conveniences of being only a mile from Phoenicia's main drag, but closer to utterly amazing swimming and fishing areas and hiking trails, and so much more. I love Phoenicia wildly, and I bet you will too, there is real magic and warmth to be found here! The Trailways bus from NYC stops in town in front of the hardware store, a 20 minute walk to the house. Or, once the bus stops in Phoenicia, you can then even ask the bus driver to drop you off at Woodland Valley Road and Route 28, which will put you a mere few blocks from the house. Local bus service along the mountain towns on Route 28 and to Kingston is available but the schedule is quite limited. Countless guests have enjoyed my home without a car, but please note that Lyft and Uber have not found their way here just yet and area car services and taxis are woefully limited and hard to find. Cars can be rented in Kingston, about a half hour away, and at the airports.
More intrepid travelers should plan on bringing a car, as our towns are so spread out, but Phoenicia has so many good restaurants and fun things to do, if you don't mind a little walking, you can forgo one entirely, although this is not recommended in the wintertime. It should also be noted that our town has no food delivery at all. Drivers, please note that the driveway has room for two cars, and street parking is available in the daytime only. Bikers tend to love it here, but will need to bring their own rides!

Small town urbanite, realtor and entrepreneur, world traveler, lover of life, doer of things. Hosting my home to visitors to Phoenicia intersects neatly with my work, matching wonderful Catskills homes with buyers! I thoroughly love sharing my "Hideaway" with others and providing a comfortable spot to enjoy discovery of our beautiful and vibrant area.
Amy is a great host and this is a great house!

Amy’s beautiful place in Phoenicia is truly a home away from home. She’s made it so cozy and a pleasure be in from the moment you step inside. Comfy, stylish house, endless nature at your doorstep, AND you can bring your pup? Basically my version of heaven! There were even little treats when we arrived, like chocolates on the counter and a couple of helpful things she left for us in the fridge. We actually stayed here when the COVID-19 situation was really starting to become a big concern, and I have to say, Amy really went above and beyond to make sure we knew everything was very throughly cleaned prior to our arrival. It was truly spotless! We got to enjoy the firepit in the evening with some hot cocoa she had stocked in the apartment. We also cooked dinner one night and this place has absolutely everything you could need: pots, pans, blender, crockpot - you name it! Bed was super comfy. Kiwi, our family pup, gives the whole experience two enthusiastic PAWS up! :) We actually accidentally left behind her favorite toy, her bouncy ball, at the house and Amy made sure to get it back to us. Now is that pure kindness or what?! I was so touched! Also, it’s great to know how very responsive Amy is anytime we messaged her prior to or even during our stay. Huge bonus: she has a very thorough guide to the area, printed and waiting for you when you get to the house. We would ABSOLUTELY return. Amy, you are the best! Thank you!!

Amy's place was in a fantastic location, very close to the heart of Phoenicia. She provided a guide (both online and printed) to the best hikes, cafes and go to spots around the place which was very helpful! It was an all around great stay! Definitely check out sweet sues for amazing pancakes.

Amy’s place was awesome! Only 20 minutes to Hunter Mtn. for our ski trip. She gave us so much information on what was around the area AND how to get there. It is a pretty desolate area as far as cell service goes, so this was much appreciated! Her space was so cozy, we loved being able to hang on the couch and watch Netflix and I loved being able to cook while away from home, as she had everything I needed to do so! Would definitely recommend and would definitely stay again if we make plans out that way in the future! Thanks Amy!!

Great hospitality and local tips from Amy. My toddler (and husband) both loved the hot chocolate she provided. Nice open family space.

Cute and cozy. Stayed up here for a weekend out of nyc and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Incredibly relaxing, surrounded by beautiful nature. Amy was an amazing host and gave us loads of info about the area. Would definitely go back!

We had a lovely time at Amy’s home. From the welcome sign with our names on it (including the dog’s) to the bath towels rolled thoughtfully on the bed, Amy added so many special touches that made us feel welcome. The place is great, with a fully equipped kitchen and great big couch for lounging which came in handy during an especially rainy stay. We loved the area, especially moseying around Tinker St in Woodstock, snowy walks with the dog down the Ashokan Rail Trail, and pizza from Resort Ridge just down 28 (so good!). We highly recommend a stay at Amy’s Esopus guest house!
