Enjoy life the way the Hampton's used to be. The wrap around verandas of Rose Cottage invites family and friends. Enter and you will discover a gourmet kitchen with all the cookware you could ask for. A master suite is a great retreat. There is also a guest room .
There is a ladder to a loft which gives a water view and a good place for reading. I hate to mention the word rain, but if it happens, the kids will be happy with this space... and the parents will be too.

About David Heiman
I am a retired wall street software developer who spent many years commuting. Now I live a more quiet pace, mostly in St John USVI, and traveling to France and Italy to visit old friends, great restaurants, lovely small inns.
David Heiman purchased this House in 1998
Why David Heiman chose Shelter Island
Rose Cottage is a short ferry hop away from both the north shore and south shore shuttle services into the city.
We had a lovely time and the house was perfect for reconnecting with family. Lots of space and beautifully furnished. Would definetly stay here again.

Our family had a wonderful much needed retreat at this lovely property. We spent a lot of time cooking meals in the beautiful kitchen, eating on the enclosed porch, and enjoying the outdoors. David gave us good suggestions of nearby activities. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! We would love to stay again.

Our family was on Shelter Island for a wedding and Rose Cottage was very close to the Ram's Head Inn where it was held. The owner, David, was so accommodating with our needs. The kitchen is well stocked with an amazing assortment of dishes, pans, and spices. Also, there is a large lawn for children to run and play. We hope to return to the island someday and would definitely stay at Rose Cottage again.

This was our best VRBO yet! We were utterly charmed by Rose Cottage. The house is beautifully decorated and the grounds lovely. Our family of 4 with a small dog had comfort and privacy. It's been a dream of my daughter's to stay in a bedroom with a cupola--and her dream came true! This was among the best equipped kitchens we've seen. We had intended to go out to dinner, but found the kitchen, along with the gas grill and the beautiful porch, too tempting to give up, so made fabulous meals and ate in. David was very helpful. We wanted to canoe, but didn't have a rack on our car, so he moved it for us to the water's edge. Two nice bicycles are also provided at the house. Did I add that there is a screened in porch, open porch with rockers, and a working fireplace?? We were so sad to leave--we would definitely love to go back!!

We loved our stay at Rose Cottage. The property is so lovely. We made good use of the porches, rocking chairs and hammock. Delightful in the mornings to enjoy coffee and breakfast, wonderful in the evenings to gaze at the fireflies and stars, and at all times of day we were on the lookout for deer, chipmunks and rabbits. The whole house is a delight, the kids particularly loved the third floor bedroom and the library in the loft. Susan the housekeeper is incredibly helpful and accessible. Overall a very relaxing get away!

Our family, including a toddler and an infant, had a wonderful week at Rose Cottage. The owner goes out of his way to make sure your stay at Rose Cottage is a true vacation. Shelter Island was a great place to explore, and such easy access to the North and South Forks of Long Island for day trips.

The BEST place to stay on Shelter Island. Our family has been going the Rose Cottage for the last 3 years. The owner Dave is a "gem". We have a total of 6 in our family so the house accommodates everyone. I have worked in the restaurant business for many years and thoroughly enjoy the "chef's" commercial kitchen. Everything I need to prepare all meals and baking is on site. I was very impressed with kitchen on my first arrival. There is so much to do on Shelter Island and my children look forward to going every year. Book early and you won't be dissapointed....

Our family enjoyed this quirky, rambling Shelter Island home. Comfortable outdoor space served as a focal point for family and extended-friend dinner gatherings, while the top-notch kitchen was stocked to the hilt with just about anything a serious cook might need. The house was quite spacious for six adults - two parents and our adult children, each accompanied by a guest. In addition, our Golden Retriever, Henry, found the large front porch and chasing of rabbits very much to his liking.
The house is located just a few minutes drive from the North Ferry; the location is peaceful and quiet. David was quite accommodating with the entire rental process and the home and its amenities were just as stated on the VRBO site.
This is our third visit to Shelter Island and it's a truly special place. We've enjoyed hiking in the gorgeous Mashomack Preserve, as well as the varied selection of wineries on the North Fork - we especially recommend Shinn Estate Vineyards and Anthony Nappa's The Winemaker Studio (think Anomaly Pinot Noir white wine!). The drive through the Hamptons out to Montauk is a half-day well spent. Bob's Fish Market on Shelter Island was a good source of fresh local seafood for home cooking and Noah's in Greenport served up some interesting and savory tapas. Vine Street Cafe, while quite expensive, was an extraordinary and memorable dinner. Hay Beach is a great little spot for relaxing and bocci ball. The star gazing from Rose Cottage on clear nights was awesome! Driving through the Forks, Sag Harbor and the Hamptons is a reminder that Long Island Forks region is stunningly beautiful.

I cannot believe I have neglected to write a review after all these years. Our family loves this house. We cannot stay away. The owner, David, Is wonderful and all our needs are met. It's our home away from home... and we adore it.
